Why do you buy handmade?

I think our wonderful handmade shops need a little bit of encouragement. Why do you buy handmade? How important is it to you? Remind businesses why getting their name out helps you buy from them! The economy is driving businesses down into the ground and spirits are as low as ever. Now is your chance to speak out and tell them why you love Indie so much!

The Little Black Box is desperate for summer participants. If you are a business who would like to participate simply head over to our site and read our FAQ page for details and then fill out our sign up form. Once you hit send it's automatically sent over to me and you're basically all set until you start getting our weekly reminder emails for the month(s) you sign up.

We need you to spread the word about our movement just as I spend 10-12 hours a day doing it. It's my passion. It's my livelihood. Without handmade, The Little Black Box and The Handmade Guru I would be lost. Let's keep this fire alive!

Everyone who answers this post will be entered into winning a black box for them and a friend. Winner will be picked Monday morning via random.org so make your comments count and spread the love!

I buy handmade because I love the originality and creativity that is behind each product. I'd also rather my money go to a small indie business than a great big corporation.

There's also something awesome about knowing exactly where your item has come from, and knowing that someone put a lot of care into it's creation!

I buy handmade because I love how unique and creative the items are. They are typically one of a kind! I also enjoy supporting the little shops out there :)

This is what I wrote in my Etsy profile (I am just a buyer. Substitute HANDMADE for Etsy:
I am really trying to buy as much as I can handmade now. I appreciate the quality and it feels good to send my money to the "little guy", someone who I get to know and feel like I can call my friend. In fact, I feel like just about everyone I have bought from on Etsy is now a friend! You can't say that about the Big Name Store. They don't know me; they don't care about me; and they really could care less if I shopped with them or not! So "GO INDIE!!"

The Etsyfriends have sounded off on our blog. Hope it spikes some great interest in this opportunity. I loved it when I was in the box and I think all should try it out!!

I buy handmade because there is a big difference in quality and uniqueness. It's like receiving a treasure, something that you know you will use or give away as a gift. I particularly like to support others in their endeavors.

My reasons for buying handmade are varied: quality, supporting individuals rather than an organization, one-of-a-kind items...but mostly I buy handmade because I appreciate the beauty of the unexpected, the ways that artisans and handcrafters can take something ordinary and create something unique.

I buy handmade because it is a way to get unique items that are not mass produced.
Most handmade shops have totally unique items that I could not find elsewhere.

I was raised with handmade quilts from my nana and handmade clothes from my grandma. To me handmade equals LOVE. I love the fact that everything is unique. I have encouraged my children to choose handmade items over mass produced ones. Last year for Christmas they were allowed 4 gifts - 3 of those had to be handmade and they had to make all of the gifts they gave away. I had 3 little kids shopping on etsy it was great! This is something we will do again this year. The only difference is that they are the ones requesting that we do.

I buy handmade because each item has its own uniqueness. I also know that a lot of love was put into making whatever I bought - and supporting someone who has obviously purused their dreams of having their own business!

Why I buy handmade? Well, I like the idea that someone put alot of love, attention, and detail into something that I am going to display in my home, or give as a gift. It makes me a proud owner of someone elses dream.

I buy handmade because I love the uniqueness of the items. Knowing that there aren't THOUSANDS of other kids on the Earth with the same cute little onesie, for example. I know that the item was made with love, like all the items I make! It's awesome to know that someone is making something JUST FOR YOU! BUY HANDMADE!

I like buying handmade because you get a unique item someone made with their own two hands. People really dig the gifts I give them especially the teachers. And I like getting handmade stuff, it's better quality and made with love. Plus it helps a person who may not be able to work or needs a bit of money, so it's all good...
